MAKING SCENTS OF FRAGRANCE: The Noughty low down. Noughty

MAKING SCENTS OF FRAGRANCE: The Noughty low down.

It’s a well-known fact that our sense of smell has a strong influence on our emotions. It plays a very important but often undervalued part, in our personal sense of wellbeing. That’s why here at Noughty, the choices we make about the fragrance in our products are really important to us. Quite simply, we know how much of a difference the smell can make.

Our Noughty choice is always to always formulate with a minimum of 97% natural ingredients, and a maximum of 3% synthetic in every product. This choice enables us to carefully and consciously balance high-quality performance, with safety, and sustainability of the natural. When it comes to fragrance, we choose to carefully temper our use of natural fragrance ingredients with naturally derived, synthetic, and even nature-identical ingredients. Why? Because no matter how much we believe in the beauty and efficacy of purely natural fragrance, natural fragrance ingredients can be challenging.

The challenges of natural fragrance:

Consistency and experience. The odour profile natural fragrance ingredients produce varies slightly from year to year, and harvest to harvest, as a result of weather conditions. Yep, hours of sunlight and millimetres of rain have an impact on how an essential oil smells. And what’s more, the same natural fragrance ingredients can smell totally different in a shampoo base compared to a conditioner. So we find natural fragrance ingredients provide the best experience when used in small doses. Tempering our use of natural fragrance ingredients with naturally derived, synthetic, and nature identical ingredients bring you a divine sensorial experience and help us ensure consistency and continuity. Every time you open a tube, tub or bottle of Noughty haircare, you know exactly what to expect.

Safety. Next, there’s the fact that natural fragrance ingredients, especially essential oils, can be potent and active on the skin. This can be positive when for example, antibacterial or anti-inflammatory effects are required. However, natural fragrance ingredients can also irritate some sensitive skins and scalps and can contain known allergens. Our Noughty choice to carefully balance the natural and synthetic helps to give you a safe product. Always. And just to be clear on what we mean by synthetic: synthetic substance or synthetic compound refers to a substance that is man-made by synthesis, rather than being produced by nature. In other words, if human intervention is required, then the substance is considered synthetic.

Defining the natural alternatives:

Naturally derived fragrance – think of these as the best of nature…just not all of nature. The starting point for these materials is natural, but processes are used to change the chemical structure of the raw material.

Synthetic fragrance – think of these as imitators, picking up on a specific note or smell and copying or amplifying specific aspects of it. These are produced through chemical reactions that have no corresponding natural aroma chemical. They are exceptionally stable and we know everything about them.

Nature identical fragrance – these are synthetics, created through reactive chemistry that have the same chemical structure of naturals but don’t come from botanicals. Think less imitator, more direct replica. They are impossible to distinguish from the original.

In the end, we want you to fall in love with our haircare scents and feel good about your hair and scalp. Always. Carefully crafting each Noughty fragrance with some or all of these types of fragrance ingredients, means we can fulfil our commitment to creating evocative aromas that:

  • stay the same whether you’re smelling a shampoo, conditioner, treatment or styling product
  • are safe for sensitive skins to allow the largest number of heads to benefit from Noughty’s products
  • protect plant species endangered in the wild from overuse while still celebrating their unique smells

It warms our cockles to read your wonderful comments about our fragrances and we hope you continue to share the fragrance love.
